CAED Scholarships

Cal Poly scholarships are administered through Cal Poly Financial Aid through a single application for University, College, and Department scholarships.  Applications open in early March of the freshmen year and later years, and are accessible through the Cal Poly Scholarship app in your Cal Poly portal. 

The following are CAED scholarships selected by the CAED Scholarship Committee based on the criteria listed under each award. Department scholarships can be viewed through the links to the right. 

Castagna Architectural Scholarship

Award: multiple awards at $15,000 each

Eligibility:

  • Architecture or Architectural Engineering majors only
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen as defined by the FAFSA
  • Must have completed their first full year as an undergraduate architecture or architectural engineering major in good standing, or be an architectural graduate student who has already completed their undergraduate degree in architecture or in a major acceptable to the graduate program
  • Preference for those with low income as determined by FAFSA
  • Recommendation from at least one faculty member or adviser attesting to the applicant’s commitment and potential in the field of architecture or architectural engineering.
  • Personal statement describing background, educational and career goals. Statement should also address how this scholarship will make a difference in the applicant's life and career. (Specific questions for this essay are included on the scholarship application).

Selection Process: The CAED Scholarship Committee, under the direction of the Associate Dean, will select the recipients from the qualified applicants. 

Recipient's Responsibility: At the end of the academic year awarded, the awardee will submit a one-page personal statement to the CAED Associate Dean detailing their success during the preceding academic year and how the scholarship supported their success.

Robin L. Rossi Award

This award is to assist worthy students in time of personal need or to reward students demonstrating exceptional effort. Students from all CAED disciplines are eligible for consideration based on effort and talent not necessarily directly associated with traditional measures of academic achievement. Potential for future success as demonstrated though such criteria as innovation, creative problem solving, overcoming difficult or unexpected circumstances, supporting fellow students, and entrepreneurship may be considered in the selection of students.

Eligibility:

  • All majors in the CAED
  • Demonstrated outstanding worthiness

Selection Process: The CAED Scholarship Committee, under the direction of the Associate Dean, will select the recipients from among the qualified applicants.

Herbert Collins Scholarship

This scholarship supports junior, senior and graduate students who have demonstrated promise in their industry and scholastic excellence.

Awards: multiple awards at $2,000 each

Eligibility:

  • All majors in the CAED
  • Junior, senior, or graduate students
  • Financial need optional
  • Minimum 3.00 GPA
  • Demonstrated outstanding worthiness

Selection Process: The CAED Scholarship Committee, under the direction of the Associate Dean, will select the recipients from among the qualified applicants.

Recipient's Responsibility: Letter of appreciation to the donor with a copy to the CAED Dean's Office.

Harold and Evelyn Hay Award for Environmental and Sustainable Design

This scholarship is intended to assist students in the College of Architecture with a strong interest in sustainable design.

Awards: multiple awards around $1,500 each   

Eligibility:

  • All majors in the CAED
  • Class level: Open
  • To recognize students with interest in solar design

Alice C. Loh Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes Women's Contributions in Environmental Design to a fifth year student majoring in either Architecture or Landscape Architecture.

Award: $500

Eligibility:

  • Architecture or Landscape Architecture majors
  • Must currently be enrolled in 4th year courses in either major, with the scholarship available for 5th year study
  • Scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest GPA in Cal Poly cumulative grades and major courses

Selection Process: The CAED Scholarship Committee, under the direction of the Associate Dean, will select the recipients from among the qualified applicants. 

Recipient's Responsibility: Letter of appreciation to the donor sent to the CAED Dean's Office at caed@calpoly.edu or 05-212 front desk.

Douglas James Martin Scholarship

This scholarship assists Freshman, Sophomore, or Juniors in the College of Architecture with a 2.5 GPA or higher. This is a "Book Grant Award" for students with interest and ability in the area of computer applications/skills related to architecture and environmental design.

Award: multiple awards at $1,000 each

Eligibility:

  • All majors in the CAED
  • Expressed interest in computer applications

Selection Process: The CAED Scholarship Committee, under the direction of the Associate Dean, will select the recipients from among the qualified applicants. 

Recipient's Responsibility: Letter of appreciation to the donor sent to the CAED Dean's Office at caed@calpoly.edu or 05-212 front desk.

Dr. Glenn G. McRae Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior student enrolled in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Based on student participation in Cal Poly multicultural student activities.

Award: $1,500

Eligibility:

  • All majors in the CAED
  • Demonstrated participation in Cal Poly multicultural student activities.

Selection Process: The CAED Scholarship Committee, under the direction of the Associate Dean, will select the recipients from among the qualified applicants. 

Recipient's Responsibility: Letter of appreciation to the donor sent to the CAED Dean's Office at caed@calpoly.edu or 05-212 front desk.

Dan Panetta Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship assists Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning majors with a demonstrated interest and commitment to affordable housing and sustainability projects.

Award: $750

Eligibility:

  • Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning majors
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to affordable housing and sustainability

Selection Process: The CAED Scholarship Committee, under the direction of the Associate Dean, will select the recipients from among the qualified applicants. 

Recipient's Responsibility: Letter of appreciation to the donor sent to the CAED Dean's Office at caed@calpoly.edu or 05-212 front desk.

Giving to the CAED

Students in the ARCH 241 - Architectural Technology Fundamentals class display their custom-designed and handmade bricks. With the support of WRNS Architects in San Francisco, the class traveled to Pacific Clay in Lake Elsinore to make the bricks, after firing, they were shipped up to Cal Poly.
