George Hasslein (1917-2001) was the founding dean of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design where he continued to teach until his death. His influence stretched over five decades. His teaching philosophy was based on one belief: that the function of a teacher is to help each student realize his or her potential as a human being.

The George Hasslein Endowed Chair was established as a non-tenure teaching position for prominent practitioners and scholars. The appointments will be for a term of one to two years. In order to attract candidates with active practice involvement, team appointments for up to five members will be considered.

Occupants of the Chair are encouraged to place special emphasis on the following:

  • Student mentoring;
  • Student classroom interaction with practitioners;
  • Field trips to urban environments; and
  • Enhancing the college’s interdisciplinary instructional activities for faculty and students in all five majors.

The Hasslein Chair is being actively funded through a partnership between CAED Foundation and the CAED. Anyone interested in more information about this endowment may email Brenda Flood.
