I am proud to share our latest edition of Connections e-Magazine. As we look forward to spring commencement and celebrating this year’s graduating class, I would like us to take a moment to reflect on some highlights from the winter and spring quarters.
- CRP Professor Dave Amos presents a five-part YouTube series on the basics of city planning.
- Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) bring leading industry expertise to CAED interdisciplinary studio.
- Landscape architecture studios reimagine the Engineering West Courtyard.
- Poly Canyon caretaker program gets new wind, and its app goes live.
- CAED star athletes lead the pack, perfectly balancing academics and sports.
- ARCE students take on the biggest Structural Forum yet.
- Landscape architecture senior show reinforces CAED students are Ready Day One.
My sincerest appreciation to our alumni, faculty and staff. Thank you for your unwavering partnership and dedication to our students. It’s been a pleasure serving as interim dean and sharing the accomplishments of the CAED with you all.

Video Textbook Brings City Planning Education to YouTube
To help people better understand cities, Cal Poly City and Regional Planning (CRP) Professor Dave Amos created a YouTube channel, City Beautiful, almost seven years ago. The channel has become widely popular, amassing nearly 90 million views.

SOM Takes Interdisciplinary Studies to New Heights
When it comes to creativity at Cal Poly, the sky is the limit — literally. This winter and spring quarter, twenty-two students from the Architecture (ARCH) and Architectural Engineering (ARCE) Departments are collaborating with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) to create original designs for a skyscraper in San Francisco.

Structural Forum: Connecting Students to the Professional Industry
Hosting over fifty companies in the largest event space that San Luis Obispo has to offer, Structural Forum is more than an average career fair. It is an annual event organized entirely by students that promotes industry connections within the field of structural engineering.

Bringing Student Caretakers Back to Poly Canyon
Originating from the vision of George Hasslein, the first dean of the CAED, the hilly terrain was designated as a showcase for the construction of large-scale experimental structures. Over the years, many generations of students have engaged in hands-on learning, with some of the student-built structures tracing back to the 1960s.

Revitalizing Hasslein Courtyard
The Engineering West Courtyard, commonly known as the Hasslein Courtyard, is a unique outdoor space at Cal Poly named after George Hasslein, the founding dean of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED).

Running the Gauntlet from Studio to Stadium: A Conversation with CAED Student Athletes
Balancing work and life as a student within the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) is never easy. Long studio and lab hours, busy schedules, and all the trials and tribulations of college life make for a challenging academic career.

Students Inspire Hope with Landscape Architecture Senior Show
Cal Poly’s Landscape Architecture (LA) program takes pride in having a graduating class that is Ready Day One. The senior show is an opportunity for fifth-year LA students to showcase their readiness through their senior capstone projects, which encapsulate years of study, experience, and innovation.

Student-Developed App Revolutionizes Poly Canyon Experience
Over the past sixty years, students have used these nine acres of vast, grassy hills to bring their most ambitious designs to life. Today, Poly Canyon features 30 permanent student-built structures and serves as the primary location for introducing students to Cal Poly.
